Rise to Walk Foundation
Mission:
The
mission of the Rise to Walk Foundation is to provide information
and resources that will enable paraplegics to walk and to live
their lives independent of a wheelchair.
Background:
Each year in the US, there are approximately 10,000 new SCI's
with nearly half classified as paraplegics. Many of these
people, perhaps as many as 10% of them, would choose a future
life without a wheelchair if only they knew it was possible.
Imagine, if each year 500 paralyzed people that heretofore
didn't have a choice, could be living active and full lives
without a wheelchair. This is the dream for which this foundation
was established.
In January of 2002, 18 year old Michael Losee was paralyzed
in a snowboarding accident in the mountains of northern Utah.
His injury is medically classified as a T-12 complete.
After two years of rehabilitation at the Sit Tall Stand Tall
program in Provo, Utah, and extensive research and personal
experimentation of walking methodologies, Michael today lives
an active life without a wheelchair, walking full time with
KAFO leg braces.
Knowing the personal fulfillment of living life without a
wheelchair, he has launched a mission to impart his personal
experience and knowledge so that other paraplegics will have
a choice.
Initiatives:
To get the word out that it is possible for paralyzed people
to walk, the Rise to Walk Foundation has undertaken four major
initiatives:
